The Right Way to Clean Your Oven (Without Harsh Chemicals)
When was the last time you really cleaned your oven? (Be honest!) Between spills, splatters, and baked-on grease, the oven can be one of the toughest spots in your kitchen to keep clean. But here’s the good news — you don’t need heavy-duty chemicals or eye-watering fumes to get your oven sparkling again.
Step 1: Empty and Prep
Start by removing your oven racks, pizza stones, and anything else inside. If your oven has loose crumbs or burnt bits, use a handheld vacuum or a damp cloth to wipe them out. You want a clean surface to work on before you tackle the tough stuff.
Step 2: Mix a Natural Cleaning Paste
Skip the store-bought cleaners — all you need is baking soda and water.
Mix ½ cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water until you have a spreadable paste.
(Optional: Add a few drops of lemon juice or white vinegar for extra degreasing power and a fresh scent.)
This simple paste is gentle but mighty — it breaks down grease and grime without damaging your oven’s finish.
Step 3: Let It Sit Overnight
Spread the baking soda paste all over the inside of your oven, focusing on the back wall, sides, and bottom (avoid heating elements). The key is time — let the paste sit for at least 8–12 hours, or overnight.
During this time, the baking soda works its magic, loosening up that tough, baked-on mess.
Step 4: Wipe It Clean
In the morning, use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe out the baking soda paste. For stubborn spots, a plastic scraper or spatula can help lift away residue without scratching the surface.
If there’s still some white film left, lightly spray white vinegar onto the area — it will fizz and help lift off any remaining residue. Wipe everything down again with a clean, damp cloth until your oven shines.
Step 5: Don’t Forget the Racks
While your baking soda paste is working overnight, soak your oven racks in a bathtub or large sink filled with hot water and a few tablespoons of dish soap or vinegar.
After a few hours, scrub them with a sponge or brush, rinse, and dry.
Step 6: Enjoy the Freshness
Once everything is clean and dry, put the racks back in and admire your sparkling oven — no fumes, no residue, no toxic chemicals. Just a clean, fresh-smelling kitchen!
Bonus Tip:
For light maintenance, give your oven a quick wipe-down every couple of weeks. The longer spills sit, the harder they are to clean later. A little consistency keeps your oven looking (and smelling) brand new!
